  7. This readme file tells you the general information for Effective 
  8. Desktop. For specific information for this release, see the 
  9. RELEASE.HTM file and VERSION.TXT file.

  13.     Windows 98/98SE Users
  14. **********************************************************************
  15. If you are upgrading from an earlier release of Effective Desktop and
  16. you have TaskbarX activated, you MUSH CANCEL the installation now and
  17. follow the instructions below. Otherwise the installation may fail.
  18.   1. Cancel the installation now.
  19.   2. Uninstall the current version from "Start Menu" or "Control 
  20.   Panel". 
  21.   3. You will receive a message that says not all files could be 
  22.   removed. Ignore that message.
  23.   4. Restart Windows. (Very important)
  24.   5. Install the new version.
  25. The reason for this is that Windows 98/98SE will not unload the 
  26. taskbarx.dll file even if TaskbarX has been closed. Windows 2000/ME
  27. users won't have this problem.

  31.     What is Effective Desktop
  32. **********************************************************************
  33. Effective Desktop is a set of utilities to extend your Windows 
  34. desktop and make it cleaner and easier to use.
  35.  
  36. With ExplorerX, you can hide unused icons in the tray notification 
  37. area and change the appearance of the Start button & Start menu.
  38.  
  39. TaskbarX adds more functionality to the Windows taskbar and provides 
  40. modules like calendar and clock. It is based on a open plugin 
  41. architecture and further functionalities will be developed by the 
  42. vendor or any 3rd party developers.

  44. WindowsX provides multiple virtual desktops to Windows.

  48.     System requirements

  50. Effective Desktop will run on any computers with Windows 98, 98SE, 
  51. ME or 2000. Effective Desktop should also work under Windows 95/NT4 with
  52. Internet Explorer 4.0 or later installed. Windows XP is not yet supported.

  56.     Installation
  57. **********************************************************************
  58. To install Effective Desktop, run Setup.exe and follow the
  59. instruction.

  61. To uninstall Effective Desktop, Choose "Add/Remove
  62. Programs" in "Control Panel", and select "Effective 
  63. Desktop".

  65. You should shut down TaskbarX before (un)installation.
